Conversations With Tomorrow
These pieces were a part of a group show at Maryland Institute College of Art’s 2024 Senior Artwalk, showcasing Johnson’s 2023-2024 thesis work.
Investigating perception of space: personifying the abandoned and empathizing with the lost. The above works focus mostly on neglected spaces and displaced objects, vacant of humans but present in what we have left behind. These paintings serve as an instrument to confront and comfort the viewer in their loneliness by recognizing the universal sentiment of estrangement or abandonment. The depicted spaces are both real and imagined -- drawing from my personal collection of images and lived moments. In the pieces I commiserate with the isolating aspect of the environment whilst also connecting with the nature and conditions surrounding it. While incorporating saturated colors and surreal characteristics to simulate the real world, they are still obvious in their fantastical qualities. Using paint as a tool to transcribe these captured moments, this collection is a reflection of the memories and feelings experienced when I was there.
